Marine Lake Opens

Swimmers can now enjoy safe outdoor swimming in Weston

Marine Lake opened on 1st June following months of work to remove silt and improve access.

Weston’s Marine Lake is now open after investment to remove 30,000 tonnes of silt. Investment by North Somerset Council as part of the ‘Great Lakes’ initiative announced in 2021.

Alongside the silt removal, new steps have been installed while there are plans to further animate the space around the water to ensure it can become a year round amenity and cultural destination for local people and visitors.

Key to the project has been the energy of Mudlarks who campaigned for the investment. Claire Trevor-Roper, one of the directors, said: “The Marine Lake Mudlarks are pleased to continue to work with the council to regenerate Weston’s lake. We will help with the periodic draining and cleaning of the lake – much like Clevedon – as well as regular litter picking with the Cleaner Coastlines team.

“We will be helping organise and facilitate events at the lake, with Culture Weston and others, as we now have a wonderful venue all-year-round, not just as a safer place for swimming and watersports, but also for theatre, live music events, poetry and possibly cinema. This should significantly boost the area, both for locals and for the tourist trade.
