The famous Grade II* listed Birnbeck pier, first opened in 1867, is getting a facelift!
When it lands in the hands of the RNLI, they will build a new lifeboat station and training facility. The RNLI will then return its operations to the island and restore public access. The lifeboat service was originally based on the landmark for 131 years. But it was forced to move off the island in 2013 after crew became concerned for their health and safety, working on a structure in an increasingly dilapidated state.
The new station will rejuvenate activity around the seafront and improve the safety of the sea.
